Professional Values and Ethics Paper

Values and ethics are a set of beliefs, ideas and standards that hold meaning and importance to the individual. When thinking about values and ethics and their meaning, it is important to remember that although most people can have similar beliefs, each person has a special set of values and ethics that they live by (Andrews, 1999). These values are derived from life experiences, childhood upbringing and organized religion (Graber, 2009).

A person’s values will determine how he or she will react in a situation, and will regulate his or her behavior. When a person lives by a strong moral set of values there is a measure of honor, trust and dignity that is represented (Posner, 2010). Having values allows the individual to proudly stand his or her ground when taking a stance on immoral or unethical behavior. Holding certain values creates character, discipline and personal standards of quality (Posner, 2010).

Ethics are the principals and moral code that an individual lives by. A person with ethics will do what is right, good and fair for all who are concerned in a situation (Andrews, 1999). The ethical person is not self serving but rational and just; doing those things that seem unpopular but are righteous and honorable in the sight of his or her peers.

Three sources of professional values and ethics are: the workplace, school and the church (Graber, 2009). In the workplace each employee upon acceptance of a position with the company learns about the values of the business and the ethical behavior that is expected. Very often companies give training and guidelines on how the employee should conduct him or herself at all times (Posner, 2010). Work place ethics are critical because the actions of one person can reflect on the whole company (Andrews, 1999).
