Why It Should Be Legalized

Some people believe that marijuana is a bad drug and should not be permitted in society. However, I strongly disagree, I believe that marijuana should be legalized and sold everywhere in the United States. I feel that its should be as accessible as cigarettes and alcohol. I believe that the profit generated by legalizing and taxing marijuana can greatly help our economy and our countries debt. However, there are some risks involving the legalization of marijuana.

Marijuana is medically legal in fourteen states including New Jersey, which was recently legalized. But for the other thirty six states marijuana is illegal and criminalized by the law and authorities. In the thirty six states that marijuana is illegal its sold on the black market by illegal drug dealers and distributers.

Marijuana is a substance that has become very much a part of American culture. Nearly 65 million Americans have either used it occasionally or regularly. The use of marijuana hit mainstream America about thirty years ago and it has been accepted by a large segment of society ever since. With the amount of people that smoke marijuana regularly there is a huge opportunity for profit. If a 0.5 gram of weed sold for ten dolors, which is the regular price on the street, there would be a profit of about $8.50 being that marijuana is greatly abundant, grows everywhere, and does not cost much to grow, package, and distribute. Legalizing it would also free up hundreds of jail cells that could be used to jail more violent and dangerous criminals such as a rapist or murderers. These people oppose a much more dangerous threat to society than someone that smokes a little bit of pot.

The risks of smoking marijuana are skeptical. A lot of people say that its harmless and even is healthy for us. On the other hand many people disagree with that. The effects of marijuana are only short term effects. These effects include distorted perception, problem with...
