Informative Speech

When it comes to the game of basketball, the name Michael Jordan often comes to one’s mind. Often referred to as the greatest player to ever play the game, Michael Jordan, also known as MJ, wasn’t always the man he is today. Ever since a young child growing up in North Carolina I’ve followed Michael Jordan throughout his basketball career. During his road to glory, MJ endured many trials and tribulations. During this speech I will be discussing, his early life, and his life in the NBA.

Born on February 17, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York, Michael Jordan was the second to youngest of five children. He has two older brothers by the name of Larry and James, an older sister by the name of Roslyn, and a younger sister by the name of Delores. While Jordan was still a toddler, he and his family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. As a young child, Jordan was raised to be very strong willed and independent. He was taught to always work hard by his father, and was taught to sew, clean, and do laundry by his mother. Michael Jordan was always athletic; he began playing basketball, football, and baseball at a very young age.

It wasn’t until high school when Michael Jordan began to face is first true hardships. His sophomore year, at 5’11, he was deemed too short to compete at that level and was cut from the varsity basketball team. This only caused Jordan to strive harder and harder. Instead of giving up after failing to make the team, Jordan used it to push himself to greater achievements, practicing hour after hour on the court. "Whenever I was working out and got tired and figured I ought to stop, I'd close my eyes and see that list in the locker room without my name on it," Jordan said, "and that usually got me going again." While growing four inches over the summer, he eventually made the team the following year and led them to the state championship.
