Curriculum Guide for Spoken Language and Word Recognition

Introduction

Not every student learns in the same way. Their abilities to focus and understand at times may require using different strategies to ensure they are “getting it” or understanding the material that is being delivered by their teachers. It is necessary for a teacher to have a reference or guide to refer to when teaching their students academics. A curriculum guide is an effective tool teachers can access when creating lessons and collecting the information needed to teach a specific area. Curriculum guides provide information for teachers to teach so that educational goals or objectives are met. When the curriculum is provided there is a systematic way of introducing material from the beginning to end with additional material every year the student progresses. Teaching strategies, principles for governing behavior, interventions followed by accommodations that will be useful and needed for the students are tools that effective teachers utilize. The curriculum provided below introduces phonics for speech and word recognition for the primary grades at an elementary school. “The goal of phonics is not that children be able to state the "rules" governing letter-sound relationships. Rather, the purpose is to get across the alphabetic principle, the principle that there are systematic relationships between letters and sounds” (Chard & Osborne, 1999).
