Personal Responsibility & Academic Success

Personal responsibility starts in the early stages of life. It is introduced by parents at a young age through house chores, such as cleaning a bedroom, or taking out the garbage; as well as social guidelines such as how to behave in public. As the individual grows older and entries high school, more adult responsibilities begin to be introduced, such as borrowing the family car, watching a sibling, cooking meals for the family, or grocery shopping. As the individual approaches adulthood, he or she may join the military, get a job, move away to college, get engaged or rent an apartment. These actions signal the conclusion of the developmental years but do not conclude the need to continue improving or acquire additional responsibilities. When seeking out a degree, it would be wise for a college student to practice the use of personal responsibility in developing a plan if he or she wants to be academically successful.

My opinion of personal responsibility is that each individual should take responsibility for his or her own actions with an understanding that those actions affect the people close to them. People, who we interact with, directly influence our success. Personal responsibility is a necessary skill in life and is the biggest part of reaching goals we set for ourselves. When it comes to personal responsibility, procrastination and excuses will cause us to deviate from the path to success and drive away from an opportunity to have a complete and successful life. The road which responsibility is laid on is not a short journey. Willpower and self discipline and motivation will help with self accountability and pressure from our social circles.
