ABSTRACT

This paper discusses why natural gas is important to energy efficiency in a time where our world is becoming more and more energy efficient. This paper is about the advancement in the natural gas industry. More specifically Marcellus shale drilling. The Marcellus Shale is in the Appalachian basin which is basically from New York to West Virginia. This paper will discuss in detail the drilling process of the Marcellus shale wells such as the horizontal and hydrofracturing process. Also it will discuss why it is important to the United States. It will also discuss what natural gas is used for.

INTRODUCTION

In today’s society we are always trying to find ways to become more energy efficient. Finding ways to become more energy efficient is important to the world because the world runs on energy. Our cars, homes, and just about everything runs on energy. Energy comes in six forms. The six forms of energy are chemical, radiant, mechanical, electrical, thermal, and nuclear energy. There are sources of energy that are nonrenewable, which means when they are gone they are gone, and there is nothing we can do about it. That is why we must always be trying to find other sources, or alternative sources of energy. So that our world can always function. One way that our country is becoming more energy efficient is Marcellus Shale drilling. Marcellus Shale is a form of natural gas found deep in the earth. “Natural gas is an abundant, domestic energy resource that burns cleanly, and emits the lowest amount of carbon dioxide per calorie of any fossil fuel” (“Marcellus Shale- Appalachain” 2011).Marcellus Shale is much deeper then the gas wells known as shallow wells. The Marcellus Shale was found in the northern Appalachian basin areas such as New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
