Macbeth

The play “Macbeth” is infamously known for its dangerous and suspicious subject matter. Throughout the play the character of Macbeth is at the mercy of his own ambitions, and his actions reflect his development as a character. Macbeth’s character changes and develops from being a loyal and respective nobleman, to being a psychopathic tyrant, and by the end of the play, Macbeth is repentant and almost apologetic for his actions.

In the beginning of the play, Scotland is at war with other nations and the odds are not in King Duncan of Scotland’s favor. Even with the odds against him, Macbeth fights for Scotland and because of his valiant efforts, turns the tides of war and Scotland wins. Macbeth’s love of his country drove him to fight without the fear of death. This shows his loyalty to King Duncan. On the way home from fighting, three witches appear to Macbeth and Banquo and prophesize to them. The witches called Macbeth “thane of Glamis, thane of Cawdor and King”. Macbeth knew that he was Thane of Glamis but was confused when the witches called him things he was not. Banquo was happy though. After the encounter with the witches, Macbeth and Banquo are met by Angus and Ross who tell Macbeth that the real Thane of Cawdor is being executed for betraying King Duncan. Also that he, Macbeth, was being given that title as a reward for being so valiant and heroic in battle. Macbeth was suspicious at first and then was happy. The nMacbeth started to think about the fact that the wtches were right in naming him Thane of Cawdor, sothen they would also be right in naming him King. Macbeth liked the idea of being king. This is the start of Macbeth’s character development. In Macbeth’s aside in line 143 of scene 3, “if fate will have me be king then let it be so”, he is accepting the idea that he could be king soon and he won’t try to do anything to stop “fate”.
