The purpose of criminal law in the criminal justice system is to react to crime in the communities’ criminals affects. The criminal justice systems works on many levels such a, local, state, and federal governments which sometimes leaves agencies disputing over jurisdiction over cases. Many agencies including the police department, sheriff’s offices, courts, and correction facilities are there to work and support the criminal justice system. There are five steps in the criminal justice process which are investigation/arrest, pretrial activities, trial, sentencing, and corrections. When the investigation leads to evidence it can be accompanied by a warrant which is issued a judge letting a law enforcement official arrest or search a specified place or person. After a criminal has been arrested they are transported to booking where they are identified and placed into custody. Pretrial services are typically within 48 hours of the arrest and consist of first appearance, preliminary hearing, information or indictment, and arraignment. The trial is a proceeding that discusses laws relating to the case for the purpose of convicting or acquitting the defendant. Sentencing consists of giving the guilty party a punishment which can vary from fines, probations, jail time, or even prison. Corrections take in the offenders that have been sentenced to prison and are sent to confinement facilities. Therefore, there are the steps that make up the criminal justice process. There are many goals in the criminal justice system which is deterrence, incapacitation, retribution, rehabilitation, and restoration. Deterrence is an important goal to the criminal justice system because be letting criminals know that there is going to be punishment for their actions, it can deter them from committing the crime in the first place.
