Preventive Maintenance Preventive maintenance is prearranged work which is performed to a plan with the intention of averting the wear and tear or an unexpected breakdown of equipment mechanisms. Preventive maintenance can also be said to be a timetable of planned actions aimed at maintaining and preventing the complete collapse and failures of equipment. The most important goal of preventive maintenance is to avoid the collapse of equipment before the breakdown actually takes place. A preventive maintenance plan is designed to safeguard and improve dependability on equipment. This is achieved through the replacement of worn components before they actually stop working or breakdown. Some of the activities that is contained in preventive maintenance include equipment checks, incomplete or absolute overhauls of equipment at specific periods, changing of oil in machine that need oil, lubrication and so many other things. Furthermore, workers in an industry can keep record of equipment to see whether it is working properly or deteriorating; this is done in order to know when to replace or fix worn parts of a machine or equipment before it breaks down and causes the whole system to fail. Preventive maintenance is not only carried out in the factory but also the home. In our houses, things like cleaning of water gutters, greasing of decks, renovating a house and trimming on a regular basis, cutting down brush and plants in order to keep the surrounding of our homes clean, and inspecting the state of drains and vents. All of these activities could also be regarded as preventive maintenance; this is because all of these activities are planned to lessen the threat of damage to a house, and also to keep the house in a very good state.
