Part I:

1. Any employee doing poor work is putting themselves in a position for punishment, however; the punishment should not be drastic because it could cause the employee to quit or do less work. Verbal abuse should never be warranted in a situation, sitting down and talking about things is the best way to go about it, not offending each other. The best method to use is the three strike method, this includes a verbal warning. If punishment is still needed after the verbal warning that employee would be written up and if situation still continues, it would lead to firing the employee.

2. I feel that most managers do use punishment because it is needed to keep employees following company policies. You are going to run into employees who do not follow rules and there needs to be something for situations like that.

3. One downside can be that the manager could overuse their ability to inform punishment because of personal opinion of an employee. Another downside would be the negativity it would have on that employee. Positive reinforcement does not have a downside; it is always a good thing to motivate employees. They will not only feel better about themselves but will enjoy working more too.

4. I have probably worked for a boss that uses punishment, however; I never was punished at any of my jobs. I have worked for companies that use the three strike method and it seems to work well for them. Sometimes I have seen people improve after getting a verbal or written warning and once in a while you would see the people that did not care and went to go on to get their third strike.

Part II:

Sandy, it has been brought to my attention that your work performance is not meeting the goals for our team.
