Canada is a country with a broad immigration policy. This is reflected in its ethnic diversity. According to the 2006 census by Statistics Canada, Canada has 34 ethnic groups with at least one hundred thousand members each.

Anti-discrimination laws refer to laws that safeguard the rights of people to be treated equally. In Canada, the Canadian Human Rights act seeks to protect all individuals against different forms of discrimination. The act states that all individuals should have an opportunity equal with other individuals to make for themselves the lives that they are able and wish to have and to have their needs accommodated, consistent with their duties and obligations as members of society, without being hindered in or prevented from doing so by discriminatory practices based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, disability or conviction for an offence for which a pardon has been granted (Department of Justice Canada, Canadian Human Rights Act, 1985.)

The main purpose of the act is to ensure that all individuals are treated equally regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, etc. by prohibiting discriminatory practices. The human rights act was enacted by the federal government and therefore applies to all federal areas of jurisdiction.

As a landed immigrant or permanent resident, a person can live and work for any enterprise in Canada without any time restriction. They are afforded many of the same rights held by a citizen with the exception of voting, running for public office and holding a Canadian passport.

Given that the Canadian Oil Company and Foster Bruce are functioning businesses they should already have an established code of conduct and practices. A code of conduct and practices or “Ethical code” are adopted by organizations to help its members understand what is acceptable behaviour.
