Coca-Cola

While attempting to think of a company that uses technology to expand its global presence, one company comes to mind, Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola is known as a multinational beverage corporation, manufacturer, retailer, and marketer of non-alcoholic beverages and syrups. Globalization involves international trading which spreads, “technology, culture, and politics” (Weber, 2011). Coca-Cola has mastered each of these obstacles and is now known as a global leader.

Coca-Cola (the soda) was invented in 1886 by pharmacist John Stith Pemberton in Columbus, Georgia. This formula and brand was bought in 1889 by Asa Candler, who later incorporated the company in 1892. Today, this company offers over 500 brands in 200 countries/territories. This company also serves 1.7 billion servings every day. A franchised distribution system that dates back to 1889 is used by the company. Basically that means that The Coca-Cola Company only produces the syrup concentrate, then they sell this concentrate to numerous bottlers throughout the world. The bottlers hold exclusive territory where they are located. Coca-Cola does own a bottler company that is the known as their anchor bottler in North America, known as Coca-Cola Refreshments.

Throughout the years Coca-Cola has acquired many different brands of beverages. Some examples of this include but are not limited to the company getting Minute Maid in 1960, Barq’s in 1995, and Fuze Beverage in 2007. At one time Coca-Cola even owned Columbia Pictures (1982), but then later sold the movie studio to Sony in 1989 for 1.5 billion after only paying 692 million for it. This is the only non-beverage acquisition known to date for The Coca-Cola Company.
