A major change that has occurred in the tourism industry around the world is the rate of growth and development associated with tourism. Fundamentally, tourism generates means of livelihood that eventually rejuvenates an economy. Tourism and Sustainability, aims an attempt to make less impact on the environment and local culture of the destination as much as possible and leaving as much positive experience on the locals.

With the above in view, this essay surmises various factors and objectives of tourism and sustainability from a series of journals, case studies and other works.

An important issue for tourism, and tourists alike, is how best to curb or better manage this astronomical growth in the industry. This essay seeks to examine and review issues that are of paramount interest for better tourism and sustainability. In conclusion various strands have been drawn and a number of factors examined and considered which would in effect make tourism and sustainability a success.

In an article entitled “Governance of Tourism and Sustainability”, B. Bramwell and B. Lane (2011) states aspect of Tourism and Sustainability that seeks to address the issue of sustainability is the governance of tourism and sustainability. Tailored and effective governance is a key requirement for implementing sustainable tourism: (Bill Bramwell and Bernard Lane, 2011) it can enhance democratic processes, provide direction and offer the means to make practical progress”. Supporting evidence appears in a study by Dredge et al. (cited in Bill Bramwell and Bernard Lane, 2011 )“... the term governance is used less frequently than the related terms of tourism politics, policy, policy-making and planning, and destination management” Dredge & Jenkins, Hall & Jenkins (cited in Bill Bramwell and Bernard Lane, 2011). Furthering the objectives of sustainable tourism would require the participation of the destination communities as a principle of that sustainability.
