Corporate Culture: Necessary for Success
October 3, 2009
An unknown author said, “We tend to think we can separate strategy from culture, but we fail to notice that in most organizations strategic thinking is deeply colored by tacit assumptions about who they are and what their mission is.” (Famous Quotes, n.d.) This statement very much spells out the importance of corporate culture and how it defines the attitudes and success of an organization. In any function, whether it be a school, a home, an organization, or a company, setting expectations are imperative to the success of what it is they are trying to achieve. In schools, the rules are set out very clearly from day one. Treat others as you would like to be treated is stressed initially because this concept is universal through all grades and lay the foundation for respect. At home, a common culture is to epitomize honesty. Even in the face of consequences, most families would prefer honesty when it comes to mistakes. Organizations may foster collaboration; Girl Scouts for instance create a mission of courage, confidence, and character. Companies can have a variety of culture statements depending on what their needs and goals are and where there priorities lie.
The book states that “Corporate culture communicates how people in an organization should behave by establishing a value system conveyed through rites, rituals, myths, legends, and actions.” (Ghillyer, 2009). Organizations are ultimately responsible for setting the tone on how they want employees to behave and this starts from the top all the way down to the frontline. Making a conscious decision to lay out expectations and model them under the most extreme circumstances takes determination and fortitude. Deciding what type of culture fits your company will largely rely on what you are trying to achieve. You must also determine your priorities and ensure that whatever type of culture you promote meets those needs.
