Marijuana has become an extremely popular drug among many Americans, especially with teens. It is thought by many to be harmless and non-addictive, however I do not agree with this misconception. There has long been controversy over the use of marijuana. Supporters of legalization of its use always bring up the argument that it is less destructive than alcohol. The fact that one drug is less hurtful than another is not a valid reason for the use of that drug. Jumping off of a bridge into the water is less destructive than jumping off of a tall building onto pavement; however the end result is the same for each of these. This writer doesn’t recommend either one of them.
I have known many people who have said marijuana is not addictive or that it is not physically addictive. This subject has been researched quite extensively and occasionally brought out into the public eye whenever another group for the decriminalization decides to fight for its legalization. Marijuana use became most popular during prohibition during the 1920’s and early 1930’s when alcohol was illegal. After several murders were committed by individuals under the influence of marijuana, several states decided to form regulations to control its use. There were widespread rumors that marijuana caused crazed violence. In all reality it wasn’t the marijuana that caused the murders, but instead was the lifestyle of the individuals who had committed the murders. Although, marijuana did not cause the murders, this was the first suspicion that there was a problem with the use of marijuana.
While looking on the internet I found several websites for individuals who smoke marijuana, to discuss anything and everything; however their topic of choice was usually the fact that they were “sooooo High,” right then and just how great they felt.
