EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION IN THE WORKPLACE

Communication is necessary for effective operation in every aspect of a company. Although departments may get their directions from corporate goals and objectives, communication is the link that bridges them together and facilitates the organization success. There are several definitions of communication; however, Wikipedia defines communication as - an interaction between two people in which information is exchanged. The receiver then decodes the message and gives the sender feedback(1). Communication involves the sharing of ideas and information. Most people think communication comes only in two forms; oral and written. The truth is communication comes in multiple forms. For example: A knowing look or a gentle touch can communicate a message loud and clear, as can a hard push or an angry slap. Communication of information, messages, opinions, speeches and thoughts can be done via different forms of modern communication media, like, e-mail, telephone and mobile(2). The importance of effective communication cannot be overemphasized for one specific reason. Communication is needed to increase efficiency, satisfy customers, improve quality, and create innovative products.

One hundred and four Silicon Valley employers responded to a survey asking them to rate their satisfaction levels with the communication skills of their recent college graduate new hires. Employers reported they were less than satisfied with the oral and written communication skills and noted a number of areas needing improvement. More employers recommended improving students’ oral communication skills, particularly in the use of vocabulary and self–expression. They reported that college graduates’ skills are not always adequate to perform the tasks required on the job.
