The Causes of Pressure on Students to Get Good Grades

Each person has the desire to be in charge of his life. As a student to be in control of life and future choices it is a must to maintain a high GPA. For that reason, education is the most important part of a student’s life. Yet, maintaining a good GPA is not easy. Sometimes it causes pressure that can be the reason of serious health problems. For instance, the major effects of pressure are insomnia, eating disorders, and headaches. Therefore, we need to understand the causes of this pressure to stop the negative impact of it on students’ lives. Thus, the main causes of pressure to get good grades are the stress of maintaining a scholarship, parents’ expectations, and the kind of future career.

The first cause of pressure on students to have a high GPA is maintaining a scholarship. A scholarship is a financial reward that usually won’t be repaid; it is for students with high academic grades to continue their education. Nowadays, many Saudi high school students are aiming for specific majors in college but the Saudi universities are not offering those majors. Therefore, they consider studying abroad but the cost of living and the university fees are unaffordable for them. To continue their educational dream those students must get the approval for a scholarship. This, for sure, will leads to pressure because even if the student get accepted for the scholarship, the idea that he will not continue his educational dream if he does not preserve a high GPA is nerve-racking. The student will be anxious, and sometimes he will suffer from self-downing “The person will actually believe that he is incapable of certain achievement”(Procrastination, 2012). “What if I fail a subject?” “What if I’m not smart enough to get good grade in this subject?” Those are some questions a scholarship student will ask himself that will cause pressure.
