Abstract

This paper provides a case study and the beginning steps of a successful analysis and resolution for a case study. Listed will be the identification of ethical problems, listing of priority data, the identification of missing data, the identification of all ethical options and the support for each ethical option and lists conflicts with moral self within the body.

Case Analysis

ES is an 82 year old female who is currently a patient in a mixed rehabilitation/skilled nursing care facility. She was admitted three weeks ago after a broken hip pinning. She plans to be discharged back to her home which she shares with her son and daughter in law. ES is in good health and other than mild hypertension corrected with medication; she receives weekly PRBC transfusions for chronically low hemoglobin. The underlying condition is undiagnosed but most likely a form of anemia or perhaps an oncologic pathology. It is undiagnosed because her son does not want chemotherapy for his mother and the transfusions seem to be working well. She told you once that she would like to know why her oncologist won’t tell her what the cause of her bleeding is. She is currently a DNR but this is because all patients at this facility must be DNR as a qualification for their admission. This is a very highly recommended facility and has documented 75% success in reintegration of their rehab patients back to previous life skill and settings. ES is functionally unable to walk and rolls her own wheelchair with some difficulty. She is on a regular diet and eats in the dining room with the other residents. She participates with the other residents and patients in activities such as bingo and is an active member of the book club. You are the nurse on duty at 0900.
