Emotional Intelligence in Human Resources Management

Imagine if we lived in a world with no emotion. It would be a pretty boring place. The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines emotion as a state of feeling; a conscious mental reaction subjectively experience as strong feeling usually directed toward a specific object and typically accompanied by a physiological and behavioral change in the body. If we didn’t possess emotion, there would be no passion or sensation displayed nor conciseness exuded. We would be a society of robots. Fortunately, we humans are full of emotions and sentiment. These emotions are displayed in personal life, and also carry over to our professional lives. Emotional intelligence is an essential resource used by managers to balance their feelings in order to make effective decisions. One aspect of human resources management in companies is the training and development of employees. Human resource departments implement emotional intelligence trainings for managers to become more effective leaders.

By definition emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage one’s own moods and emotions and the moods and emotions of other people. (Jones and George, 2009) Emotional intelligence can be defined into four main types of abilities, including perceiving emotions, using emotions, understanding emotions, and managing emotions. Understanding one’s own emotions and being able to detect emotions in others is the ability to perceive emotions. The use of emotions is necessary to optimize the outcome in any situation; it’s important to be able to change dispositions in order to execute tasks effectively. Being able to describe and recognize how emotions changes overtime, shows the ability to comprehend and understand emotions. When it comes to a leader managing emotions, one must be able to regulate and harness emotions to be able to achieve goals.
