In recent months, a typical example of conflicting business ethics arose a controversial debate upon residents in Los Angeles' China town. Many within the neighbourhood support the idea of such a notorious source of cheap clothes, groceries and electronics, however others worry that the superstore would put a severe dent in the community's heritage and culture whilst putting the smaller convenient stores out of business. There are many business ethics involved in this case, focusing on how such a prominent retail giant can impact on the retailers within the surrounding area. It could put pressure on the area's existing markets and even drive some out of business. It could represent a crack in the historic character of a community that serves as an entry point to Southern California for immigrants arriving from China and other Asian countries. Understandably, this has led to an outbreak in protests against the planning permission being handed to Walmart. Even shop owners have publicly announced on their shop windows that they are anti-Walmart.
The possibility of such a large convenience store would have an immediate recruitment effect on the surrounding area. However,Although such a large store would introduce numerous jobs to the area, many people would lose their jobs, particularly the locals, who would struggle to compete with the store. It seems unfair that whether it's locals or not, that the people that have relied on the business within the area for so long, are facing the possibility that their business will be stolen by the inevitable outcome of Walmart. With regards to ethics, this is a big issue, as many will have their livelihoods at stake at the expense of what is essentially one of the largest retailers locating within this area.This however is only one ethical issue that may be implemented in the process.
