When an essay question uses the phrase “To what extent” this means that you are expected to evaluate a proposition contained in the question.
EXAMPLE: To what extent did the economic and political developments as well as the assumptions about the nature of women affect the position of American women during the period 1890 – 1925?
In this question, the proposition concerns how three factors affected the position of women during a specific time period.
What you should do is develop a “pat” thesis for such questions. A good way is to choose which of the factors listed in the question as having the greatest effect. This is also where you can use the following format for your thesis statement.
A and B were important factors, however, C was the most important factor.
A good response to the above question could be:
Political development along with the role of women were important factors, however, economic developments had the greatest effect on the position of females during the period 1890 – 1925.
