Abstract

This paper is about how to prepare and execute a presentation using a technique called Audience Analysis. The example of preparing for a quarterly sales meeting will be used in this paper. Audience Analysis assists a person in making them aware of who is in the audience, and will assist in delivering the message clearly and in terms that will be understood. In this paper a number of audience characteristics that should be considered will be covered. Having diversity among the audience is a big obstacle to overcome and knowing how to address that situation will help the presenter provide the information desired. Making sure that the message has effectively been transmitted is the presenter’s goal. In this example, preparing a quarterly sales meeting for stalk holders, managers, salespersons, and customers will be challenging because of the variety of knowledge of the subjects at hand. Being prepared is important to provide the proper information, tone, language suitable for the audience that is being addressed.

When preparing a presentation or writing a paper that is directed to an audience it is vital to know the audience. According to Locker & Kienzler (2008), “Audience analysis gives you the tools you need to shape your product and your message.”(p. 41). Different characteristics must be considered, what purpose does your presentation or paper have. What demographic characteristics and barriers do the audience poses? Such as age, race, skills or trades, language, culture, background knowledge, etc. Knowing your audience will assist in communicating effectively. It is important to provide the proper environment, character, tone and language suitable to the audience being addressed.
