History

The Municipality of Sta. Maria was separated in 1983, from San Agustin, its mother municipality through the initiative of Hon. Isaac Corpin, SB Member/ABC President who chaired an Ad Hoc Committee of the Sangguniang Bayan in session assembled.

He was administered by Hon. Nemesio Ganan Jr., Assemblyman for the Lone District of Romblon, to undertake the gathering of significant data for the possible creation of this municipality.

The municipality was originally named IMELDA, which is synonymous to a beauteous ambitious young lady, dearest to a man in power, and sincere in her desire to serve worthy of emulation with the guidance of our Divine Almighty God.

This municipality used to be a part of the municipality of San Agustin. Formerly called “Imelda”, this municipality was created by virtue of Batas Pambansa Bilang 234 in 1982 and inaugurated on December 8, 1983. In 1986, upon assumption of Pres. Cory Aquino, the name of the municipality was changed from Imelda to Sta. Maria in honor of Our Lady of the Immaculate Concepcion, the Patron Saint of the Municipality, by virtue of RA 665. It has three (3) barangays, namely Bonga, Concepcion Norte and Concepcion Sur. Later, through the persistent effort and active leadership of its benevolent Mayor Rudy M. Mindo, three (3) additional barangays were created. Inaugurated on July 12, 1988, were barangays Paroyhog and Sto Nino while San Isidro was inaugurated in July 1991.

Of the six 6) barangays, Concepcion Norte is considered the growth center and where the seat of municipal government is located.
