Current Business Practices Audit

Learning Team B conducted an audit of Riordan Manufacturing’s current business practices at its processing plants located in California, Georgia, Michigan, and China. The business sustainability worksheets used to complete the evaluation aided the team in detecting three non-sustainable practices the spilling of materials that may could cause land and water pollution, the waste of energy from lighting, heating, and processing equipment, and emissions of dyes that may cause air pollution.

In the event of spilled materials, there is potential for water and land pollution. For example the BP spill that happened a few years back that caused significant damage up and down the coast. Riordan has to be aware of potential damage to the water and vegetation that surrounds the area of spilled materials. The company has to understand that any type of hazardous spill can have an impact not only the area that spill but also areas that surround the spill.

If Riordan continues to waste energy, more resources will be needed that pull from the environment. As resources are pulled from the ground and fossil fuels are produced, which eventually goes into the environment destroying the ozone layers, which leads to greenhouse gases.

Air pollution could possibly be caused from the adhesives and damaged dye bags used by Riordan. Air pollution effects the environment by slowly causing the ozone layer to disappear. As the ozone layer disappears the climates are changing. Some parts of the country have warmer weather while other parts have colder weather. Certain parts are caught up in a jet stream, which in turn affects all parts of the world including individuals, animals, and vegetation.
