His eyes shot open, both pupils narrowed and exposed, was surrounded by whiteness and then a powerful chill came over him. His worn out, leathery hands slowly wipe off the snow from his face and realizes none of this is a dream. He’s still on Everest. The winds just tear through his clothes like he has nothing on at all. His mind constantly thinks of other places to be like the wonderful beach in Honolulu, Hawaii or just somewhere hot like Phoenix, Arizona to just get away from everything. What seemed like hours could just be minutes as he lays there thinking, waiting, hoping one of his fellow teammates or friends comes to help him on this treacherous mountain called Everest. The fall he took has him unable to barely get up. Just a few hours or so ago, he was continuing the climb towards the summit when his pick struck the icy surface and he dug into it for assurance. Little did he know the rope he was using, was thinning out by the seconds. His arm arches, thrusts towards the ice and then….the rope snaps sending the man thwarted to the thick snow and ice. On impact, two cracking noise are heard and he yells in pain as his left leg had been broken in two different areas. His face becomes buried in the coldness of snow as if a pillow and lies out unconscious. That’s what brings him right in this situation, here lying on the ground, waiting for help but everyone else seems to be at the summit. All he can hope for is for them to help him on the descent back to base camp, or else he’ll just have to find his own way back.

Disaster and chaos was went on in John Krakeur’s novel Into Thin Air and showed the diversity and courage of some of the men, and selfishness in some of the others. Throughout the book, some may say these men were in no condition or physical shape to have summited the tallest mountain in the world.
