Part 1:

Using the data in Figure 1 and Figure 2 provided below, what can you say about

a) population change by local government area in Scotland for 2000-2010 and

b) change in the age structure of the Scottish population for 2000-2010?

a) Figure 1, “Percentage change in population, council areas, 2000-2010“, shows that there are (mainly) parts of Scotland's west that have experienced a decline in general population. These areas include Eilean Siar, Argyll& Bute, North Ayrshire, South Ayrshire, West Dunbartonshire, East Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and Dundee City.

As a contrast, parts of Scotland's east have experienced the highest population growth changes, 8% or more. These areas are Aberdeenshire, Perth& Kinross, West Lothian, City of Edinburgh, East Lothian.

Scotland's North and south-east and parts of it's center have a moderate population growth of 4-8%.

These areas are made up of Highland, Stirling, Fife, Clackmannanshire, Falkirk and Scottish Borders.

The lowest population growth of 0-4% is mainly in the south, Midlothian, North Lanarkshire, Glasgow City, East Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire, East Ayrshire and Dumfries& Galloway. But also in other areas arround the country, namely Shetland Islands, Moray, Aberdeen City and Angus.

b) Figure 2, “The changing age structure of Scotland's population, 2000-2010“, shows that there has been a decrease of 7% in 0-15 year olds, an increase of 9% in 16-29 year olds, decrease of 11% in 30-44 year olds, 14% increase of 45-59 year olds, increase of 13% in 60-74 year olds and an increase of 14% in 75 and over year olds.

The major reason is seen to be emigration from Scotland, particularly to the rest of the UK.

On the other hand, there have been some arrivals from the new EU states such as Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Czech Republic etc. But still, one could say that Scotland has generally experienced a natural decrease in population with an excess of deaths over...
