Since its creation in 1976 SAS institute became one of the most successful software firms in the industry and enjoys a history of continued growth. The main source of this success is the ability of SAS Institute to foster it most valuable resource - its creative capital- through its ‘utopian’ culture. Several elements such as work environment, hiring practices, organizational structure and compensation system drive this culture, which in turn drives employee motivation.

Work Environment: SAS created an atmosphere or working environment that encourages employees to incorporate the company's goals to their personal needs. At SAS Institute, standard workweek is thirty-five hours. The company provides childcare centers, health centers, recreation and fitness facility and bunch of facilities to all its employees. SAS Institute seeks to send a strong message to all employees that the company truly cares about every employee. The employees therefore feel a sense of loyalty to the company. These benefits also fulfill the employees’ mental and physical needs; and are aimed at providing a stress free environment to the employees. This relaxed atmosphere and loyalty motivates employees, increasing productivity and work satisfaction.

Hiring Process: SAS Institute’s human resources philosophy has helped the longevity of the company culture by helping the company to attract and develop a quality work force. It is very tough to get hired and there’s a strong emphasis not only on technical skills but also on attitude. SAS Institute doesn’t offer high salaries to attract best talent to join the company; salary is not even discussed during the hiring interview. In this way, it hires people who want to work at SAS Institute for the work itself, and stay for the work. Money is not the key motivator them.
