Examining a Long Bone

The long bones are those that are longer than they are wide. Long bones, such as the femur and phalanges are much longer than they are wide, generally consisting of a shift heads at either end. We were able to locate and identify the diaphysis. We observed that its surface is smooth and made up of compact bone. We also observed that fibers, nerves and blood vessels enter into the bone.

Identifying the Bones of the Skull

We observed a model of the skull and with the help of Figure 10.1 in our lab book. We were able to identify the various bones of the skull and observe which were intact and/or beauchene skull. The human skull, scientifically known as the cranium, consists of 22 bones. The skull can be broken into two regions, the cranial section and the facial section. The cranial bones consist of the bones in the top of the skull while the facial bones consist of the bones that make up your face. The skulls primary functions are protection of the brain and support of the face. In the skull, sinal cavities can be found. Although the function of these cavities is still not definitively known, it may be that the sinuses function is to decreasing the weight of the skull while maintaining strength.

Examining Spinal Curvatures

We obtained models for the vertebral column and spinal curvatures. With the help of Figure 10.11, we were able to compare and observe the normal curvature of the vertebral column. With the help of Figure 10.12, we were able to identify three abnormal spinal curvatures – scoliosis, kyphosis and lordosis. We noted that these abnormalities may be due to disease or form poor posture. We examined the movement between two lumbar vertebrae separated by an intervertebral disc.
