It is always a good idea to keep a store of emergency supplies that include sufficient medication, water, and other essentials sufficient for at least 72 hours or three days. Tsunami, earthquake, hurricane – an emergency can develop with little or no warning. Bear in mind that a tsunami is a series of waves and that the first wave may not be the most dangerous. So until you hear any further notices from the relevant authority, stay away from the beach and ocean as well as rivers and streams that lead to the ocean.

Tsunami: The Killer Wave

The most destructive tsunami in history was recorded during the Indian Ocean Tsunami, generated by the most powerful earthquake in decades on 26 December 2004, which was recorded at 8.9 on the Richter scale and killed more than 150000 people and made millions homeless. According to the US Geological Survey which monitors earthquakes worldwide, the epicenter of the quake was under the Indian Ocean near the west coast tectonic plates caused the quake which led to the formation of giant waves that demolished properties and caused major fatalities

Let us learn something about the tsunami(pronounced as soo-nah-mee) and also the warning signs that can provide lifesaving information for people living in tsunami prone area. A tsunami is a series of great waves, or also called a wave train, caused by an underwater earthquake, landslide or volcanic eruption. It is a fairly common occurrence in Japan and thousands of Japanese have been killed in the recent century by tsunami. The tsunami wave can be very long, as much as 100 kilometers, and can be as far as an hour apart. It was reported that the Indian Ocean Tsunami travelled as far as 5000 kilometers to Africa, and it arrived with a strong impact killing thousands of people and destroying property.
