The Undeniable Necessity for Health Care Reform in the United States
Frequent complaints from the people of today’s society usually revolve around health care. In the United States, health care reform has been a problem that has been mulled over and not really acted upon. Polls have been posing questions about the government’s responsibility to provide health care to its citizens as far back as 1938, and even since then, the majority of the population has replied that the government should supply health care to those who cannot afford it, and over half of the population even agreed to pay higher taxes to support the cause (Spiraling). Regardless of holding the title of “the government,” the people with these high positions are still citizens of the United States like everyone they are governing and should be willing to help like the brethren the country is supposed to consist of. Other government officials, such as President Gerald R. Ford, Senator Edward Kennedy, and President Harry S. Truman, proposed national health plans that were turned down due to worry from health care providers about set prices being installed if the government took all management duties involved in health care (Spiraling). The proposals were not passed due to health care not being as corrupt as it is today. Health care is a problem in the United States because of the insanely high cost, extra fees added to premiums previously set, and high percentages of uninsured citizens. Today, President Barack Obama, Congress, and Senate have come together and installed the Affordable Care Act which includes stronger consumer rights, more affordable coverage, better access to care, and stronger Medicare for the elderly and disabled. To help with a positive change in health care, education for people in the medical profession needs to be improved, health care must become a national priority, and some laws also need perfecting.
