Interpersonal Communication

Interpersonal communication is the exchanging of information between individuals. One cannot communicate, for by choosing not to actively communicate, speak and gesture, you are communicating passively. Information is put out and received through verbal and non-verbal messages, actions, gestures, and contortions. With a work setting face-to-face communication is unavoidable. Therefore you are required to have control of both your verbal and non-verbal signals – tone of voice, facial expression, gestures and body language (Skills You Need, n.d.). In this report I will review my communication style during the negotiation.

In the interpersonal communication role play session I adopted the role of M. Gupta, a supervisor at Key Trends Inc. Key Trends Inc. is a private organization that provides data on trends in real estate in the Caribbean for its clients. Clients range from developers to tourism associations to government agencies. Mr. Gupta supervises M. Anderson and 5 other analysts. Mr. Anderson is the newest member of the team, having joined the firm a one ago. His performance during the probationary period was impressive and he assimilated well with other team members, however of late there has been cause for concern. Mr. Anderson has become prone to error and lateness submissions. The last incident saw Mr. Anderson submitting his report a day late and with conclusions that were divergent from what the underlying data would suggest. A review of his performance was urgently warranted.

Posing as Mr. Gupta, my intent was to first assure Mr. Anderson that the company recognizes and appreciates his abilities as exemplified in the probationary period. I believe it was necessary to commend him on a good probationary period where he executed the tasks required efficiently and on time while acclimating to a new work environment.
