Introduction

The objective of this paper is to critically analyze the concept of Motivation and theories developed to understand the concept in Sri Lankan perspective. The discussion is started with educating the reader on Motivation definition and importance of it in an organizational perspective. The popular theories developed to understand and explain the concept is next presented. Then each concept will be analyzed drawing parallels to practical examples from Sri Lankan organizational environment. As a conclusion some generic approaches, which are derived from the theories discussed, are presented to the reader.

What is Motivation?

Motivation is defined as the process that initiates, guides and maintains goal-oriented behaviors. Internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested in and committed to a goal achievement and to exert persistent effort in attaining a goal can be identified as the motivation It involves the biological, emotional, social and cognitive forces that activate behavior.
