The Process Flow chart of the Kristen’s Cookie Company is drawn in Fig-1: Gantt chart. Each cell in the diagram represents 1 minute to perform the sequenced activity.

(1). The time for filling a rush order is the throughput time of the process, i.e. the time for product starts being processed until the final delivery including the waiting time. For the Kristen’s cookie company-

Time taken for a rush order = Throughput time for each activity

= 6+2+1+9+5+2+1= 26 minutes for a dozen.

This has been shown in Fig-1.

(2). It is assumed that Kristen’s cookie opens four hour i.e. 240 minutes per night. The capacity of a process is defined by the following equation-

Activity | Output |

Washing& Mixing | 240/4=60 dozens |

Spooning | 240/2=120 dozens |

Thermostat setting | 240/1= 240 dozens |

Baking | 240/9= 26.7 dozen |

Cooling | 240/5= 48 dozens |

Packing | 240/2=120 dozens |

Accepting Payment | 240/1=240 dozens |

Capacity= min (capacity of activity 1,……, capacity of activity n)

Hence, the maximum order can be filled per night

= min (60, 120, 240, 26.7, 48,120,240) =26.7 dozens.

The same result can be found, if we consider output

capacity of Kristen’s, her roommate, oven and cooling.

However, the graph-1 shows that Kristen’s needs 26

minutes for 1st dozen. But, for making the consecutive

dozens, she does not need another 26 minutes. The

sequence of finishing for every dozen is 26,36,46,…,236 as of fig-1. That is, the process’s cycle time is 10 minutes. As a result, Kristen’s nightly capacity would be 22 dozens. More specifically, if Kristen’s can fill n orders, then the following expression will satisfy-

(26-10)+10n≤ 240 Or, n≤ 22.4 ≈ 22 dozens.

(3). As of Fig-1

Time taken by Kristen for 1 order = Time to perform activity 1(Mixing..) and 2(Spooning)

                                                                  = 6 minutes + 2 minutes = 8 minutes.

Time taken by roommate for 1 order = Time to perform activities...
