Every day in life as an adult we are forced to make decisions, some more important than others. Day to day decisions like what to wear to work? What to make for diner? these decisions can be made quickly and sometimes stressful. On the other hand when it comes to business decisions work related decisions simple yes or no answers may not be sufficient enough. Here is where the decision making process comes into play. A part of the decision making process is critical thinking. “Critical thinking is that mode of thinking- about any subject, content, or problem- in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully taking charge of the structures inherent in thinking and imposing intellectual standards upon the,” (Paul & Elder, 2001, p. xx)

In my place of business I’m one of the managers, daily we interact with many types of races, ages, and both genders. Like all retail stores we have our pleasant customers and the angry, impatient customers as well. At my particular location our team have a rule of thumb deal with the angry customers first, this was we keep the anger to a minimum. With our location being in New York we always have traffic in and out of the store, however the busiest times of the day are often 12 noon and after work hours 5pm - 6pm. Observing this I try to schedule my most sales driving employees, the ones who will close the sale with add-ons such as handbags, jewelry or even shoes.

One situation which required me to use my critical thinking skills left me ready to pull my hair out. On this particular day I was short 2 crucial team members, security and one cashier. With such short notice there was no time to call for backup team members, so I was forced to perform a 9 team member day (Saturday) with only 7 team members present.
