Checkpoint: Domain Name

For nonprofit organizations, ORG would be the general choice. I would say that using ORG is still somewhat exclusive and would gain a better approach from users and outsiders, in comparison to a nonprofit using a COM. The web page I would assign for the task on hand is free-flu.org. It is still available and it’s easy to remember. The organization’s name, Free Flu, is left in-tact without having to add any extra letters to the domain. I figured the dash is slightly easier for some than an underscore. I feel it breaks it up enough to be easily understood and avoid any confusion. Another good idea might be to add a few additional domains and have then forwarded to free-flu.org, to increase network traffic.

The main choices for domains are COM, NET, ORG, GOV, and EDU. For the most part, COM was supposed to be used for commercial businesses and companies. This is the domain that grew the fastest and is most widely used. Recent worries with COM, are those of its overgrowth and will be done if it continues to grow at the current rate. It may come to a point in which only commercial groups will be allowed to register with COM. The NET domain was originally intended for those in the computer industry. It was denoted for networking, but can really be used for anything. Network providers were the sole intent, but as it turned out, the domain is open for anyone and any company in any location. ORG had original intent of the top-level domain (TLD) for organizations that didn’t seem to fit anywhere else. I used to think ORG had stood for organizations, but this is not the case. Nonprofit organizations didn’t fit into the COM and NET initially, so they were then part of ORG, sort of by default.

The last two are their own category for exclusiveness, in a way. The GOV domain is open to official government organizations in the USA. A business selling anything would not be allowed to register as part of the GOV...
