Gun control is an issue in our country. Some believe it violates our second amendment, the right to bear arms. The issue should come down to this question: Does gun control reduce death rates? Gun control may violate our second amendment, but it’s needed to keep firearms out of the hands of juveniles, criminals, and the mentally ill.

Critics say monitoring gun purchases makes it harder for law abiding citizens to own firearms and is an intrusion of their second amendment right (Gun background checks, n.d). This is giving criminals the upper hand, by making their job easier to rob unarmed citizens (Gun Background Checks, 2007). Even though criminals may buy guns from gangs and traffickers, gun control will eliminate them buying guns legally. This creates more of a risk for criminals. Gun control will force criminals to buys guns illegally. Gun control reduces the amount of guns and criminals on the street.

Critics believe the second amendment should allow all citizens to purchase a firearm. All citizens would mean juveniles, criminals, and the mentally ill to purchase guns legally. Can you imagine the amount of injuries and deaths there would be if every United States citizen was allowed to purchase a firearm? Too many!

The second amendment is a right that allows law-abiding citizens to protect themselves from criminals, such as an intruder. The second amendment does not allow citizens to violate the laws and misuse guns to kill people out of rage. This amendment should be used by a mature citizen that follows the laws. Any law abiding citizens should not have a problem purchasing a gun. They should not have any problem passing a background check if they follow the laws. As far as the mentally ill, if they are not physically stable they should not have possession to a gun they could kill someone even if it is unintentional (Update, 2004)....
