Please add your reflections here after reading the case and completing the spreadsheet. Post a response to at least one other person.
Questions/tasks:
1. Upload your completed spreadsheets here.
2. What do think happened? What did Steve do? What did Tom do? Can you explain the outcome? Are there any lessons learned?
Steve expressed to Tom that he did not feel that he had the background to do the job and had more goals to accomplish in his region before moving on. Tom did not consider Steve’s opinions and continued to push his beliefs onto Steve as to why he thought he could handle the job. I think Steve left Tom’s office shocked and disappointed that Tom did not consider his feelings towards not wanting to take the job, because of this I don’t think that Steve went to talk to the VP of marketing. He firmly believed that he could not handle this position and did not receive support from his supervisor. If Tom would have acknowledged Steve’s doubts and offered solutions for working with him to ensure he was successful at the new job, I think Steve would have been more open to learning more about the Marketing Job and would have considered taking the position. I do not think that Steve took the new position. The lesson learned here are communication requires good listening to be successful. A good listener is an active listener who takes into consideration what the speaker is saying and develops the conversation.
