Identify and explain the common biases in self-perception outlined by Dunning et al. (2003) and Yammarino and Atwater (1997). Use research to describe what problems such biases in self-perception cause for individuals and organizations.
Employers
are
constantly
attempting
to
understand
what
influences
workers’
behaviour,
what
makes
them
productive,
and
henceforth,
what
instills
them
to
be
more
successful
and
well-‐rounded
than
the
next.
After
extensive
research,
it
seems
evident
that
differing
motivation
and
competency
factors
that
organisationsal
workers
possess
cause
them
to
be
more
productive
than
others.
Dunning
et
al
(2003
p.85)
analyses
the
research
conducted
that
explains
the
ways
in
which
organisations
are
greatly
affected
by
the
perceptions
of
their
members,
and
the
biases
associated
with
their
perceived
competence.
This
text
will
attempt
to
categorise
and
explain
the
ways
in
which individuals and organisations are affected by different realities perceived by both the individual and those around him.
Perception is merely one’s view of fact and reality. It includes one’s opinions, thoughts, beliefs, and images regarding oneself (Harrill, S. E. 2003). Importantly, self-perception is often derived from others’ perceptions, suggesting that the outside group can (and often will) have an enormous impact on individual’s view of themselves (Tice, D. 1997).
