I. Leading Technique
UNILAB follows the INTERACTIVE LEADERSHIP style. They uphold values of inclusion, collaboration, relationship building and caring for one another. UNILAB leaders make it a point to collaborate with its employees. Employees are often asked to form in groups to brainstorm to help in decision-making. Caring for one another like family is also one of the values that UNILAB strongly upholds. They live the “Bayanihan spirit” just like the Father of UNILAB, Jose Y. Campos did. This is the reason why despite being a big company, UNILAB does not have any union group.
II. Motivation Technique
A. Reinforcement Theory
Unilab utilizes the Reinforcement Theory to motivate its employees. Rewards and incentives are provided to employees who perform well while punishment is given to those who display undesirable behavior.
1. Positive reinforcement (UNILAB has a very low turn-over rate compared to other companies in the same industry.
- Positive feedback and social recognition
o The company recognizes the top ten percent outstanding employees through the Outstanding Performers (TOPs) of the Year program. A testimonial dinner is attended by the management and stockholders where the awardees will receive a plaque of recognition, a gift showcase and monetary reward.
o They also have the Araw ng Parangal at Pasasalamat held at the last day of the year. A thanksgiving mass is held, business performance is acknowledged and service awardees are recognized. Entertainment, raffle prizes and a sumptuous lunch are provided.
o Unilab has the ceremonial handshake at the start of each year. All senior company officers visit the offices and they each offer a firm handshake, a bright smile and a genuine New Year greeting. This shows their appreciation for a job well-done and to encourage all the employees to work their best for the coming year.
