Computers are a big part of today’s society. They hold sensitive information that, if it ever got into the wrong hands, could spell disaster for you and your love ones. While you may believe that all your personal information is safe and sound inside your computer. There is someone out there right now trying to break through and make your life miserable. With that in mind, there are a few safety measures that need to be taken to keep your information safe. They include having a firewall, proper antivirus software and, most importantly, developing and maintaining good computer habits.

Firewalls are extremely important when it comes to keeping your information safe. You are probably asking yourself what is a Firewall. The technical definition is just that technical and complicated to understand. For our purposes let’s view it like a vault in a bank. Its purpose just like a vault is to keep unauthorized people away from your computer. Unless they have the proper password they can’t get in. Just like a combination to a vault, when the correct password is entered it gives the firewall the ok to open its doors and allows you to enter. You probably thinking there has to be more to this how does the firewall know who to let in and out, you would be correct. There is more to this. In short, once you install your firewall of choice, the program will run in the background constantly scanning all inbound and outbound connections, either with its database stored server side or locally depending on the firewall. If it sees something that has been marked in its database as a possible threat, or if it is a new connection to the computer, it will block it. It will then give the user a chance to either continue to block the connection or allow it if you feel it is trustworthy. Now, this is where those good computer habits come into play.
