1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?
Diversity is used in a broad sense to refer to different demographics, including, but not limited to, gender, color, religion, race, national origin, age, education, sexual orientation, skill characteristics, and geographic origin. Diversity is valued because America’s diversity has given the U.S.A. its unique strength, richness, and resilience. Diversity is important because with it, comes the assurance that everyone is, in fact, equal. (DOI, n.d.)
2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?
Ethnocentrism causes people to make false assumptions about cultural differences. This causes people to judge others based on cultural differences. An example of this would be how Americans like to say that British drivers drive on the wrong side of the road, when actually it’s the opposite side or the left hand side. (SNU, 2001)
3. Define emigration and immigration.
Emigration and immigration are similar and often and easily confused when used. Emigration is leaving, or more specifically, it is the act of leaving one’s homeland or country to settle into another.
Immigration is coming in, such as the act of coming to and settling in a new homeland or country. (EducationBug, 2013)
4. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified?
Groups of people are identified by race, ethnicity, religion, and gender. Racial groups are socially set apart by obvious and physical differences. Ethnic groups are differentiated from the dominiant group for cultural differences such as language, attitudes towards parenting and marriage, and also food habits.
