In Chopin’s “A Story of an Hour” and Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily”, both protagonists were repressed, intentionally or not, by their men in their life which led them to commit morally questionable actions.

In Chopin’s “A Story of an Hour”, Mrs. Mallard was one of the protagonist that lived in a repressive household enacted by her husband. Her repressive environment caused her to be overjoyed by the news of her husband’s death that she eventually dies from it. Mrs. Mallard was informed by her sister that her husband was killed in a railroad accident. She went into grieving upon receiving the new but later on retreated into her room alone for an extended period of time. During the time spent alone in her room, Mrs. Mallard began pondering her life after her husband’s death and surprisingly she founded a renew hope in her life, not because she is trying to be optimistic about the future but because of the fact that her husband is dead and no longer controlling her. The thought of a life without her husband’s controlling grasp was too overwhelming for Mrs. Mallard and eventually she dies.

Chopin’s description of Mrs. Mallard’s eventual death provides many obvious evidences to the readers as to why Mrs. Mallard was overjoyed to hear the announcement of her husband’s death. For example, “dgdgdg here” stated that her love for her husband was not consistent and only happen sometimes. Mrs. Mallard’s epiphany during the alone time in her room was also another piece of evidences for it has state that “fhyfhfhfhfhfhfhfhfhhfh”

“A Rose for Emily”, however, has a more dramatic and dire consequences due to the result of Emily’s father repressive actions. The action of Emily’s father has caused her to become a very anti-social person later on into the story. The constant
