Using the skills learned in the Financial Statement Analysis seminar, I will be analyzing information from ten different companies and attempting to identify their industries.

The ten industries presented in the case study are as follows:

1. Commercial airline

2. Commercial banking

3. Computer software

4. Integrated oil and gas

5. IT service provider

6. Liquor producer and distributor

7. Mobile phone service provider

8. Pharmaceutical preparations

9. Retail grocery stores

10. Semiconductor manufacturer

A classmate shared information regarding bizstats.com. I used this site to look up information for the industries included in the case study. The information was presented for 2009. This information was extremely helpful because it allowed me access to figures for each industry. I then compared these figures to those present on the case study.

I first evaluated the brewery and winery/distillery industries (shown as liquor producer and distributor in the analysis). While the distillery information did not seem to match up with the information given in the case study, I believe that the brewery information was quite helpful.

Even though the information was only available for one year, many of the statistics presented matched up with those listed for company three in the case study. I am assuming that, since the study was averaged over three years, this accounts for the differences in several areas including Depreciation & Amortization on the Income Statement (0.00 in the case study, 4.84 on the website) and Cash on the Balance Sheet (10.47 in the case study, 0.93 on the website)[1].

Those areas that were most similar included Gross Profit (63.38 on the study, 61.82 on bizstats), and the Current Ratio (2.61 on the study, 2.68 on bizstats).
