Role of Operations Management

Operations management is essential to helping organizations improve their business processes. It could be defined as the design, execution, and control of operations that convert resources into desired goods and services. “Operations management uses resources to appropriately create outputs that fulfill defined market requirements,” (Slack, Chambers, & Johnston, 2010). Operations management is about performing the business process efficiently, effectively, and at low cost. The role of operations management is important to large businesses as well as small businesses. This paper will discuss the role of operations management in the service industry.

In the service industry, it is essential that businesses can provide quality and efficient services to its customers. No matter the type of company—hospital, bank, automobile, etc.—quality and efficiency supersede everything else in the service industry. The quality and delivery of service can impact the profits of the business in positive or negative way. The process of the business can affect the quality of a product or service. If somewhere in the process a mistake was made, it is easy to conclude that the mistake will reach the customer. This would clearly indicate that there is an issue with the process operation. This is one of a few problems that can be avoided with operations management.

The environment changes so rapidly and it is important that businesses that offer services find ways to remain competitive. Businesses must be able to design a system that will help maintain and delivery the type of services that meets the needs and demands of the customers. This can be done by an assessment of customer needs which will give them the best possible delivery/service system.
