Introduction

Veterans Health Administration is unlike any other healthcare system. Although there are similarities to other healthcare providers, it is unique not only because it was established primarily to care for our veterans but because of what they are being treated for, and why. These veterans are being provided with treatment not only for physical wounds inflicted from combat but the emotional and mental stress such as Post-Traumatic Syndrome and debilitating illnesses that are service-connected just to name a few.

The moral obligation to our service members paved the way to the establishment of Veterans Healthcare System, and this paper emphasized its goals and ethical principles, the culture within the organization, ethical values, and its social responsibilities.

Mission

To honor America's veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being.

Vision Statement

To be a patient-centered integrated health care organization for veterans providing excellent health care, research, and education; an organization where people choose to to work; and active community partner; and a back-up for National emergencies.

Goals and Ethical Principle

The organizational goal for the Veterans Health Administration (VA) is to promote and provide safety and ethical driven health care for all veterans nationwide. To stay committed to the goal VA established the National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS) and the National Center for Ethics to institutionalize safety, quality and ethics in health care (Bagian, Lee, Gosbee, 2001).
