Leadership Case Paper
This paper will answer several questions pertaining to The Case Application 2 in the Management textbook. It will give answers according to the text and the facts presented in the case.
In the case Captain Holly Graf was in the leadership role and her style to me was autocratic. She earned a position and used the position to dictate all work methods along with poor decision making which unfortunately resulted in limited participation from the crew. I think Captain Graf possessed a few characteristics of a leader. She had a desire to lead and that was proven through the hard work and education she had to get in order to get the position she held. Captain Graf also prepared since college and dreamed since high school to be a part of the Navy as her father was. She definitely had the job-relevant knowledge which is important in being an effective leader. She knew her job and was very confident in her talent and skill set obtained. So I can say she had leadership qualities, but in this case could not be called a leader according to behavior and results.
Captain Graf really abused her position and title and took on the use of Coercive power.
This is where the followers react to this power out of fear of negative results if they do not comply (Robbins & Coulter, 2012). After reading the case it is clear that Captain Graf used her authority to punish, belittle, berate and control her crew on the ship. Since this is an influential power she used the morale of the team was very low and everyone had the same complaint of the abuse, demeaning and humiliating.
I think while screening and assigning leaders to crews the Navy should have implemented evaluations at certain times of each person’s career. The evaluations should be random and scheduled and include the crew and other employees. In this case as well the crew members expressed the dissatisfaction of working under Captain Graf, but also witnessed no consequences. This...
