On The Sidewalk Bleeding by Evan Hunter

The story talks about the last minutes of Andy’s life. The author tells us about the problems with the different groups of mainly young people used in gangs in the USA. The 16 years old boy Andy was lying in the street on the sidewalk after he was ambushed and stabbed. He belongs to a gang called “The Royals”. He was attacked by the rival gang named “The Guardians”. At the beginning he hoped someone to find and to help him. He did not realize that he was going to die because he thought it was just a little injury. It was raining that day so, not many people were passing him. There were only four people who found him. None of those people helped him because either he belonged to a gang or they did not realize he was dying.

The first one was a drunken man. He came down the alley. He did not realize that Andy was injured badly. He thought Andy was drunk too and just left him lying there. After that the couple came into the alley suddenly. Initially, they were likely to help Andy but then gave up helping him because, they saw the lettering on the jacket; “The Royals”. He was a gang member. They decided not to help him. If they helped him, the Guardians would come after them.  The third person was an old woman who could not hear very well and did not notice Andy at all. She left without noticing Andy lying there.

Andy began to think about his life just because he was going to die soon. He began to lose hope which made him very sad. And also he would not see Laura again. He was very close to dying when they found him. He did not want them to say, "Oh, it's a Royal”. In the end he sincerely wanted to get rid of the jacket. He did not want to be remembered as a gang member. He wanted to be remembered as Andy and he wanted the other people to know that.  He realized that this happened to him because he was a member of “The Royals”.
