Working in a Team

Introduction

My assignment is based upon a leading IT and business services company, employing 39,000 people across 36 countries. It provides business consulting, systems integration, and IT and business process outsourcing services. I work within Enterprise Services as a Payroll Consultant where we specialise in implementing and managing Payrolls on behalf of Government and Commercial organisations. There are many different teams within our department each providing the same service to a number of different clients. My team is made up of one Lead payroll consultant two deputies and six consultants.

The main aims of this report are to evaluate the management process operated within our company and recommend ways for improvement.

In order for me to do this I will need to look at the following processes and how they are implemented within my current team and compare them with the theories available: communication, team-working, leadership, appraisal and development.

Communication

Let’s start at the beginning: what – exactly –does communication mean?

Communication is the exchange of information between people, e.g. by means of speaking, writing or using a common system of signs or behaviour.

Most managers’ feel that communication is an important issue within a company and if not understood properly can be the root cause of many problems.

Good communication will ensure that everyone understands the message sent. They will also be more likely to respond favourably to the message if it appears to be reasonable and fair to both the receiver and the business.

Bad communication will have exactly the opposite effect. People will be confused by the message and less likely to perform to company standards. Therefore a key point to remember is it is not only what you say or write, but how you convey the message.
