Managing the Generations

As working individuals, we come across many leaders who are technically very skilled but lack the qualities of leadership. Despite of their intellectual abilities they have difficulty getting along with people and remaining calm in stressful situation. The most important drivers in getting promotion is usually the technical skill of a person, but sometimes despites of these skills people fail as leaders and become unsuccessful. The reason behind is mostly the inability to control emotions and demonstrate the ability to recognize his or her behaviors, moods, and impulses, and to manage them best according to the situation. Emotional intelligence is an ability to recognize, manage and analyze emotions in connection with person’s behavior and relations to other people (Goleman, 1998). Emotional Intelligence (EI) relates to the self-perceived ability to identify, assess, and control the emotions of oneself, of others, and of groups. Those abilities are as valid, or even more so, than one’s intellectual quotient when it comes to performing better as a manager and a leader (Goleman, 1998). In today’s competitive world, companies have been assessing potential candidates’ emotional intelligence throughout their recruiting processes to find out the perfect person for the title who has both the technical skills and the emotional intelligence to perform the tasks, I have chosen this topic for my research paper because I find it very interesting and also I am very emotional person. Sometimes it is difficult for me to control my emotions. Not having control over oneself is not a good quality of a potential leader. Hence this research paper will help me in the long run of my carrier. Today’s workplace is full of four different generations which lead to many conflicts and misunderstandings that can thus lead to failure of achieving organizational goals.
