Is Mr. Gilbert a good manager?

You may say that for Mr. Gilbert, as a former CEO of a large tile company, with a great experience in the domain, it won’t be a problem for him to run his own business in the tile industry. But, it depends. For that, I analyzed from the Fayol perspective and Mintzberg perspective, his skills and performances as a general manager.

The Fayol perspective:

➢ Planning process

I think that Mr. Gilbert is a good planner taking into consideration the listed below:

- first, he plan to modernize the company to increase the quality of the products, he wants to invest in a second tunnel kiln (April 1987)

- he plans to produce over the time as a principal product, the wall tile because he think, it will gain more from this activity

- he plans to obtain the patronage of contractors

- from the HR perspective, he plans to hire three new managers

- he plans to avoid the accumulations of inventories, by buying raw materials on a day-to-day basis

➢ Organizing process

In this stage Mr. Gilbert goal is to reorganize the overall layout of the factory. He tried to achieve all that he planned previously:

- improve the quality of its products by: reducing the production errors by properly training the workers, eliminating the dust in the air and eliminating debris coming form

- he created a centralized, pyramidal structure, to maintain everything under his control, using a chain of supervisors

- also instead of hiring high qualified workers, because of the lack of capital, he decided to hire 400 workers (only 185 decided to stay) with little work experience to pay lower wages

➢ Command

Due to his involvement in all the aspects of the business (spend most of his time in the factory controlling and supervising closely the activities of his employees), I think that Mr. Gilbert represents the authority in...
